Google to stop indexing non-mobile-friendly sites - need help optimising your website?
After 5 July 2024, Google will no longer index or rank websites that are not accessible on mobile devices. Initially launched in 2016, Google’s mobile-first indexing initiative will be fully implemented by this date.
John Mueller from Google recently clarified on the Google blog that the remaining sites currently crawled by the desktop version of Googlebot will transition to being crawled by mobile Googlebot. “The majority of the web is already being indexed this way, and there will be no changes for those sites,” Mueller noted. However, from 5 July 2024, Google will use Googlebot Smartphone exclusively for crawling and indexing.
If your website is not mobile-accessible, it will no longer be indexed or ranked by Google. This move highlights Google’s emphasis on mobile accessibility, making it essential for sites to function properly on mobile devices to maintain search visibility.
While Google will continue to use the desktop crawler for certain tasks like product listings and Google for Jobs, it is crucial for websites to be mobile-friendly. Ensure that your site is fully accessible on mobile devices and test its performance using the Google Search Console URL Inspection tool to avoid any indexing issues.
